We've come a long way since 1974 when Dee and Arnold "Pepper" Wheeler decided it was time to start their own printing business. A small press borrowed during the week has become three shifts running nine presses shoe-horned into a city block. Lead type has given way to the latest digital platesetter. The camera has become a drum scanner. Our customers' price lists have become annual reports, catalogs, four color posters, and coffee table books. On our top floor there are more computers than employees. And the company that shared Arnold's nickname renamed itself to the name known in Portland to be synonymous with "quality printing". We don't save plates much more - it's all on tape. And where's that old percolator we sandblasted every year - whether it needed it or not? It's given way to an annual budget for Mocha Java and Longbottom French Roast. If you're in the neighborhood stop by for a good cuppa joe. In the beginning, bindery was an every Wednesday night family affair - Arnold and Dee and their girls collating and stapling those price lists (the girls were paid one dollar an hour). Jodi became the company's first sales person when the press work ran out. She now heads up the nine person sales department that keeps the shop dancing. Juli and Joni are still here, too. |
